WHOLE FARM PLANNING
Developing Your Whole Farm Plan for a Sustainable Future.
Southern Rivers, Central West and Lachlan CMAs
Whole Farm Plans are an invaluable tool for your property management,
set out on maps and in words. The Plan is a record of the physical
state of your property, linked with your vision for its future.
It is a concrete reference point from which you can discuss, adjust
and adapt your property management strategies through the seasons,
and fine-tune your plans for sustainable production.
Without a Whole Farm Plan, your property and its management will
not have a discrete record nor tangible signposts of your vision
and intent over time.
Here is the hands-on opportunity to create yours, based on your
unique vision for your own property.
The Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority is subsidising
Whole Farm Planning courses in the Snowy and Shoalhaven areas
by 50 %, with Landcare subsidising a further 25%. This means that
for $250 -$350 you (and your partner/spouse) can attend six one-day
workshops dedicated to assisting you to create your individual
Whole Farm Plan. The workshops will be delivered to landowners
in this catchment by experts in the field, Quality Rural Solutions,
in conjunction with Tocal College. They focus on strategies for
improving water and soil quality, becoming more drought resistant,
conserving bio-diversity, controlling weeds, and improving productivity
in a sustainable manner. By engaging in this process, you are
also working towards shared responsibilities and benefits with
your broader community.
The six day course involves both practical guidance, tuition
and advice indoors, and field trips to appropriate properties
to see whole farm plans in action.
As a workshop participant, you will:
- Produce an actual property plan for future farm and business
development. The Plan is based on an aerial / contour / mud
map of your property from which a series of overlays are developed.
- Identify, describe and interpret your farm infrastructures
and resources, including the identification of native vegetation
communities, weeds, soil types, land classes and sustainable
water management practices.
- Assess, plan, monitor and evaluate your farm's resources and
enterprises in the light of sustainable production for the longer-term.
- Plan strategies for conserving and improving biodiversity
outcomes for both productivity and environmental gains.
- Develop realistic and workable strategies for dealing with
risk
Along with the 6 full-day training sessions, participants will
also receive a comprehensive technical manual, the overlays for
your farm plan, and several books including Physical Property
Planning.
Alison Elvin, an educator, farmer and environmental consultant
with more than 25 years experience in the area, is the trainer
for the courses.
So, if your property is within the Southern Rivers CMA and you
would like to join this course, or later courses, don't delay!
